Developer Robert Findlay began studying this land in 1970, in the floodplain where Rush Creek and Village Creek meet. He dug a network of canals and used the fill dirt to raise the home sites, and the first house was built in 1972. He also formed the Lake Interlochen Homeowners Association in the early 1970s.
The neighborhood's holiday light display started in the mid-1970s as a way to market the new subdivision, and today about 200 homes take part. With houses built from 1972 onward, many remodels here replace original kitchens and baths or rework layouts for how owners live now.
The lake is more than scenery. It holds about 1.4 linear miles of water up to 15 feet deep, doubles as part of Arlington's rainwater drainage system, and is used for boating, swimming and fishing. The City of Arlington notes that the Urban Land Institute has recognized the neighborhood for its lake system. Findlay went on to develop more than 1,500 home sites across Arlington.
